Gone Green!!!

Kevin and I decided a while back that we were going to make small changes in our life that would be deemed environmentally responsible. Most people know we are liberals on the verge of hippie, minus the free love and drugs as Kevin puts it, so I guess that would make us nerdy hippies. Aaah... digressions. Anyway, we aren't doing anything crazy like putting solar panels on our windows or driving a Vespa that runs off of vegetable oil.... not yet anyway. (Although, we did sell our car and ride subways everyday). We have made a few simple changes to our lives that are minimal and barely noticable. Whether or not you believe in global warming or any of that, it is important to respect all living things, especially our planet. As Kevin and I get closer to considering adding children to the world, we feel more and more like we should try not to screw it up too much for them if we can help it. We make small changes fairly often so I thought it would be cool to share them as we made them. Thus, I am adding yet another list to my blog that will document these eco-friendly changes (I will try to add pictures for these items as I can).

This blog idea was brought on by a purchase we made today at The Container Store (New Yorker's heaven). As we were parusing the aisles we stumbled upon a dusting gizmo that can be washed and reused. Brilliant! Kevin jumped right on it since he is the duster in our family. One small step for man...

For some of you that might like to see a very impressive eco-friendly purchase (one that I might make soon), there is this amazing bag I found in In Style magazine this month. It is nylon made from 100% recycled plastic bottles! Crazy! The website (http://www.mattandnat.com/) has lots of other eco-friendly bags. Enjoy!

We use cloth grocery bags when we grocery shop. The baggers in Harlem think we are strange but whatever. We got ours at a market on the UpperWestSide but you can get them anywhere, including amazon.com.

Whenever we can afford it we also buy chemical free cleaning agents and beauty products.

So, for all of you who think we are tree huggers we haven't gone that far... but our membership to the Planeteers is in the mail!

Hi Ryanne! It's Ellen Henneman. I'm so glad I found your blog through the Halls. Anyway, I just saw an Oprah show last week on Freegans who try to minimize their impact on the environment by not buying unnecessary things and trash digging (mainly supermarkets that throw away perfectly good food) or buying used stuff. Basically they are refusing to listen to the corporate world telling us we need to buy constantly - anticonsumerism. The trash digging is a little beyond my scope, but my goal has been for a while to reduce consumption, use craigslist and ebay more and get rid of all this stuff in my apartment that rules my life. Anyway, you should check out the recap on Oprah's website because they made some really good points (I'm not a fanatic Oprah fan, but sometimes it's so good!).
The Halls have a link to our blog, so feel free to visit sometime!
